Political histrionics of Mamata were brought to a screeching halt: Irani

New Delhi: Welcoming the Supreme Court's order directing Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar to present himself before the CBI in Shillong, arch-rival BJP stated that the West Bengal chief minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee's 'political histrionics were brought to a screeching halt.'

While addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Union Textile Minister and one of the senior spokespersons of the saffron party Smriti Irani said, "One needs to look into the aspect that Rajeevji was directed to appear before a neutral place, thereby certifying that there is lawlessness in West Bengal."

She further called Banerjee "the anarchist Chief Minister" and claimed, "She intervened in the process of collection of evidence and upon whose instructions the officers were manhandled. Families were harassed, homes were surrounded. The SC has directed a response from Chief Secretary, DGP and Commissioner. Today, I am assured that apart from BJP, 20 lakh victims of the chit fund scam will join us to convey our gratitude to the Supreme Court."

The apex court said Kumar will appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Shillong, Meghalaya and no coercive steps, including the arrest of the Kolkata police chief, will take place during the course of the probe.

On Tuesday, the CBI has also filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court claiming that there are number of incriminating materials/correspondences that were collected during the probe the agency against the senior police officials as well as senior politicians.

It says SIT carried out the probe and significant evidence such as mobile phones, laptops etc were handed over to the main accused in Saradha scam case by the investigating officer of the West Bengal Police working under direct supervision of Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar.
