Oppn uses parl tool to send Triple Talaq bill to select panel
New Delhi: Fourteen opposition parties including AIADMK of the Rajya Sabha joined hand on Friday to find a unique way to prevent the Triple Talaq bill to be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Monday. Ruling BJP didn't find many hurdles to pass the bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. But the scene in Rajya Sabha is quite different.
According to the rules of business in Lok Sabha, the only mover of the bill, in this case, it's the Law minister who can only have the right for recommendation to send the bill to a select committee. But in Rajya Sabha, any member
can move a motion demanding a bill to be sent to the select committee.
Congress leader Gulam Nabi Azad and others including TMC, DMK, BSP and SP leaders met informally to draft a letter demanding the Triple Talaq bill as passed by the Lok Sabha should be sent to the select committee.
O'Brien was on record on Friday informed that on Monday they will send the letter to the Chairmen of the House that before taking up the Triple Talaq bill house first dispose of their motion. The motion was signed by all the opposition party and the AIADMK leaders. Opposition parties are hopeful that they have the number in the Rajya Sabha. Therefore their motion would be carried easily.
Opposition parties claim that they have a number of 116 MPs across party line excluding AIADMK. In the Lok Sabha, AIADMK MPs walked out on Thursday with other opposition parties against the passing of the bill.
TMC Leader Derek O'Brien told journalists on Friday, "We hope AIADMK will vote with us. Therefore, the bill on Triple Talaq would not be passed in this session. Only the fate of the bill would be decided by the next Government after the Lok Sabha poll."
He also said, "We are not discussing the merits of the bill. The only thing we're trying to impress upon the Government is that they should follow the basic parliamentary norms. Any new bill has to be scrutinised by the Parliamentary committee before tabling in the House."
Now the Opposition has decided to oppose every bill if they are not scrutinised by the Parliamentary committee.
On Friday, TMC parliamentary party has given a notice for discussion on the recent order of the Home ministry to snoop on the private computers of the citizens. But because of disruption house didn't run for consecutive 11 days. MPs were also upset that Chairman of the house Venkaiah Naidu adjourning the house in no time.
