Oppn raises incidents of crimes against women in both RS and LS

New Delhi: As soon as the House proceedings of Parliament began on Monday the opposition members raised the issues of crimes against women in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. Members escalated and spoke against the rape cases in various parts of the country, including the recent case of a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad.

Congress members displayed posters in Lok Sabha. They were also joined by members from DMK, BSP, TMC and other parties. Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders and Lower House member Saugata Roy demanded death sentence for rape cases offenders and said, " The House should take cognizance of this serious incident and the tremendous anger that is boiling within the minds of all sensible citizens of India.... The Central Government to immediately bring forward a law to make rape an offence punishable by only the death sentence which is the only fit punishment for such heinous and dastardly act."

Furthermore, Congress member Uttam Kumar Reddy slammed the Telangana home minister for his "insensitive" remarks. TR Baalu of DMK also raised the issue of sexual assault of a schoolgirl in Coimbatore.

The LS members further slammed the Telangana police for initially delaying to lodge a case.

Besides, the Rajya Sabha members unanimously condemned the incident. MPs also suggested controversial ways to deal with rapists. Senior TMC RS member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray urged the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to send advisories to states that if the police do not proceed in such cases then stringent actions will be taken.

Even the apex court has directed in umpteen number of cases to the states that, whenever there is a sexual harassment case, FIR should be lodged.

However it is not done in this case, Ray mentioned. Another Trinamool member Santanu Sen emphasised that according to the National Crime Record Bureau report, the crime rate on women is significantly increasing day by day in India. As per the Global Gender Inequality Index, India ranks 127vout of 160 countries. Answering them MoS Home G Kishan Reddy also assured that the government is willing to bring an amendment to laws pertaining to the safety of women and children.
