No proposal to change name of Barddhaman station

Kolkata: No proposal to change the name of the Barddhaman (BWN) railway station under Eastern Railway is being considered, a communiqué stated on Tuesday.

There was an impression that the Ministry of Railways might rename Barddhaman station after Batukeshwar Dutta (1910-65), a revolutionary and a resident of Purba Burdwan district who along with Bhagat Singh had thrown two bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi on April 8, 1929. He was tried and imprisoned for life.

The communiqué read: "No proposal regarding changing the name of Barddhaman (BWN) railway station in Eastern Railway is under consideration in Ministry of Railways."

As per the existing guidelines, Ministry of Home Affairs alone is the competent authority to approve a change in the name of a railway station. It does so on the recommendation of the concerned state government after obtaining a "No Objection Certificate" (NOC) from the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Science & Technology, Surveyor General of India and the Department of Post. The press note further read: "No communication has been received from Ministry of Home Affairs requesting No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the same."
