DCW rescues four girls from Private Shelter Home

Four girls from a private shelter home were rescued by a team of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday. The Commission had received a complaint against the shelter home where it was alleged that the girls were subjected to physical violence and were denied adequate food.

The shelter home housed eleven girls. Three girls among the rescued are major whereas the age of one of the girls is unclear. The girl will be sent to the Child Welfare Committee which will ascertain her age.
The rescued girls informed DCW that the co-coordinator at the shelter home was verbally abusive towards them and also subjected them to physical violence. They further added that the girls were given a target of making 150 sanitary napkins daily and they were not given food until they completed their target.

Also, they went to sleep many times on an empty stomach. One of the girls had a problem in her eyes due to the constant workload. The girls were made to do all the cleaning work too. No provision of vocational training was provided to the girls.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Delhi Police to register a FIR against the management of the shelter home.DCW has also issued a notice to the Social Welfare Department urging them to shut down the shelter home and cancelling their licence. The officials at DCW also highlighted that there also plans to conduct surprise checks at other private shelters home in Delhi.
