New Delhi: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has differed with former Prime Minister late Jawaharlal Nehru in the matter of religion and its importance. Speaking at the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in Jammu on Monday, Naidu paid tributes to Nehru for his push to science and technology as an integral part of the national planning and stated his differences with a former PM on the issue of religion.
Naidu said, "Scientific advances may illuminate our understanding of the universe. But it is the religion which provides answers to the unexplored universe."
"The issues of mind and soul and the relentless internal unrest and lack of internal peace constitutes this vast unexplored universe. It is the religion which provides some answers to these raging issues," he said.
The Vice President further stated that Nehru's emphasis on scientific temper and his outlook on religion may make him agnostic and some may even call him an atheist.
"While I pay my tributes to Nehru, whose death anniversary was observed yesterday, for promoting the cause of
science and scientific spirit, I beg to differ with him in the matter of religion and it's
utility for humanity," Naidu said.
Naidu further said, "Every religion is a body of values and prescriptions for its followers to abide by. In the absence of this disciplining force and code of conduct, it would be difficult to enforce social order on such a larger scale."
