KMC engineers mark tilted building at Shibtala Lane unsafe
Kolkata: The tilted house at 12/11 Shibtala Lane under Karaya police station area has been found unsafe by the engineers of Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) Building department.
"The preliminary report submitted by the engineers has found the building unsafe and mentioned an immediate need of repair. The matter will be discussed with Mayor Sovan Chatterjee before taking the final call on what is to be done with the building," a senior official of the department said.
The residents of the apartment located on Shibtala Lane were evacuated on Wednesday night by the police after a local informed the administration about the building being precariously tilted on the adjacent building at 12/12 Shibtala Lane. The 23 odd families living in the G+4 building constructed nine years ago are presently spending nights at their neighbours'. "We are at a loss and do not have an idea as to how long do we have to live like this," Kausar Khan, who lived with his family on the ground floor of the apartment, said.
Municipal Commissioner Khalil Ahmed and Director General (Building) Anindya Karforma along with a team of KMC engineers visited the spot on Thursday. Local councillor Nibedita Sharma said: "I have not received any information from KMC. Hopefully, a decision will be taken on Saturday."
