Gorubathan Panchayat Samiti’s 3 Independent members return to BGPM
Darjeeling: In a party programme in Pintail Village near Siliguri, three independent members of the Gorubathan Panchayat Samiti – Karuna Chhetri; Emu Gurung and Lalmaya Chhetri rejoined the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM).
The members were formally welcomed into the party in the presence of BGPM President Anit Thapa.
With their return the BGPM now has a majority in the Gorubathan Panchayat Samity.
Incidentally, the Gorubathan Panchayat Samiti had an equal number of members from both ruling and opposition factions.
The board was previously formed by drawing lots, which had gone in favour of the BGPM. However with the recent re-entries the BGPM now has a majority in the Panchayat Samiti.
The trio, though belonging to the BGPM had contested independently, having fallen out over distribution of party tickets to contest the Panchayat election. At the "homecoming" event in Pintel Village, Anit Thapa, President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), warmly welcomed back the trio stating, "You were part of our family before, and today, you continue to be family."
He noted that he and the BGPM has helped create a democratic environment where free speech is now possible in the hills. "In the past, speaking out could cost your life. Today, we have created an environment where everyone can voice their opinions. They speak, and I am here to listen. I have the capacity to listen. This environment must continue."
"They contested and won as independent candidates, even defeating the ruling party, which is no small feat. Their success reflects their dedication and work," added Thapa. He emphasised on the importance of timing and patience in politics.
