Former Bombay HC CJ Manjula Chellur joins as APTEL chairperson

New Delhi: Retired Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, Justice Manjula Chellur, has joined as chairperson of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, under the Ministry of Power.

She took the oath on Monday here at the ministry in the presence of technical members IJ Kapoor, BN Talukdar, SD Dubey and judicial member Justice NK Patil.

In the last week of July, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the proposal for Justice Chellur's appointment.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal for appointment of Justice (Smt) Manjula Chellur, retired Chief Justice, Bombay High Court as Chairperson, Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL), in the pay scale and with such 'allowances and benefits as are admissible to the post, for a period of 3 years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the official statement mentioned.

She was the first woman Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. Chellur (63) has also served as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and the first female judge of the Karnataka High Court.

"Tribunal Bar Association President MG Ramachandran assured the Bench for the full cooperation of the Bar Members in the day to day business," a ministry statement said.

APTEL did not have a full-time Chairperson for eight months, since the retirement of Justice (retd) Ranjana P Desai on November 30, 2017.
