Childline expanded to 450 locations, 76 key rly stations: WCD ministry

New Delhi: Childline, the nationwide emergency helpline for children in distress, has been expanded to 450 locations, including 76 key railway stations, the Women and Child Development Ministry has said.

The Childline till last month was operating at 435 locations, including 60 railway stations. It aims to rescue and rehabilitate missing children. The ministry officials have said Childline received about 1.4 crore calls in 2017-18 (till June 30). "The ministry advises parents to ensure that their children call on the number 1098 in case of an emergency," a WCD official said, adding about 40,000 children have been assisted through Childline. "The Childline has been operating at 76 railway stations which have been identified as source and destination centre for child trafficking," she said.

The outreach service is executed through a mother NGO of Childline India Foundation.

The Railway Ministry and Women and Child Development Ministry had signed an agreement to rescue and rehabilitate runaway, kidnapped and trafficked children through railways.

The ministry said around two lakh posters have been put in trains to caution passengers about children around them who may need help.
