Cal HC Chief Justice inaugurates e-court

Kolkata: Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Prakash Shrivastava on Thursday inaugurated a virtual court for online settlement of traffic prosecutions through NIC e-Challans.

Chief Justice Shrivastava said: "Today we are taking a very important step towards modernising the judiciary by inaugurating the virtual court. The past 2-3 years during the Covid pandemic, we have realised the importance of technology in the court."

The virtual inauguration took place in the presence of Justice T S Sivagnanam, Chairperson of High Court's computer committee, Justice Joymalya Bagchi High Court's Computer Committee, Justice Subrata Talukdar member of High Court's Computer Committee, Justice-in-charge for Kolkata district Tapabrata Chakraborty and Pandey Santosh, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic amongst others.

Calling the inauguration a historic event, Justice Sivagnanam said that this is a pilot project for the state. He also stated that the Metropolitan Magistrate Fourth Court will be designated for it.

"The virtual court will eliminate physical presence of the concerned persons, the litigants and the lawyers, and facilitate adjudication of cases through the virtual platform," Justice Sivagnanam added.

The violator will have the option to search his case by using mobile number, CNR number, party name and Challan or vehicle number on the payment of the imposed fine. The case will be disposed of virtually. The violator can also choose to contest the case by selecting 'Wish to contest the case' option, in such situation case will be taken by a regular court.
