All BEd colleges to be placed under five categories: HRD Secy

The Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry has been considering a proposal to put BEd colleges across the country in five categories on the basis of their infrastructure.
Anil Swarup, secretary of the department of school education and literacy under the HRD ministry, said on Tuesday in Kolkata that all the BEd colleges in India would be put under five categories.
Those colleges who falls in the fifth category will be able to function on their own and they would not require any regulation by the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE).
He was addressing a programme on "Transforming lives through Education and Innovation", organised by ASSOCHAM.
He also mentioned that the Centre is keen on setting up the national teachers' platform where the teachers in the BEd colleges can upload the clippings of their classroom as their credentials as both the Central and state government institutions can hire them according to their requirement.
He stated that around 4,000 BEd colleges out of 16,000 in the country have not filed affidavit furnishing all the necessary information regarding admission of candidates and other details to the NCTE despite of repeated requests.
He once again reiterated that around 25-28 per cent teachers are not regular in classes which is a major cause of concern.
Swarup also added that the Centre has written to the chief secretaries of various state governments to upgrade and transform the Anganwadi centers into primary schools for improving the standard of the education given to young children.
