AIIMS-Gorakhpur, Raebareli to start MBBS from next year

New Delhi: In an attempt to achieve a modest doctor-population ratio in the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is all set to start MBBS courses in upcoming AIIMS in Gorakhpur and Raebareli from next academic session.

According to a senior official, the construction work in is full swing in both the AIIMS in Uttar Pradesh and it would get operational from next year. "The construction of the residential complex in AIIMS-Raebareli is almost complete, while construction work of administrative work is in full swing and it would also be completed within the stipulated timeframe," the official said.

Notably, the Centre provides all the funds for infrastructure development in all AIIMS and state government help in providing a suitable land as well as basic amenities such as water, electricity, road connectivity, etc.

"Till the campuses don't get completed, the classes would be conducted in a temporary building. The ministry is in the process to finalise a temporary campus nearby the upcoming AIIMS' location," the official said, adding that the out-patient department (OPD) services is likely to get operational in early 2019.

In a related development that would give a push to the establishment of new AIIMS, the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the creation of a director's post in six branches of AIIMS with a starting salary of more than Rs 2 lakh.

The post would be created in the branches of AIIMS at Raebareli and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Bathinda in Punjab, Guwahati in Assam, Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand's Deoghar.

The director will be the chief executive officer of the institute and will be in-charge of its overall administration. The person will allocate duties to officers and employees of the institute, the statement said.
