BANGLA SCULPTOR CAN WALK FREE FROM TIHAR AFTER EIGHT YEARS
After spending eight years in Tihar jail on the charge of possessing fake Indian currency, 75-year-old renowned Bangladeshi sculptor Rashid Ahmed can finally walk free, with a Delhi court sentencing him to prison term less than the time he has already spent behind bars. Additional Sessions Judge Vimal Kumar Yadav gave seven years imprisonment to Rashid Ahmed and his woman accomplice Nurun Nahar Lovely and imposed a fine of 1.5 lakh each. Once they pay the fine, Rashid and Nurun, who were arrested here in 2004, will be able to walk free. ‘A period of seven/eight years is long one to change the face of mountains and course of the rivers. They have failed to share the pleasures, pains, and happiness with their families during these years,’ the court said. It, however, acquitted their co-accused Mohammed Abaad Ali and Imam Raja, both Indian nationals.
BIHAR’S SUSPECTED POLIO CASE TESTS NEGATIVE: UNICEF
A suspected case of polio reported in Darbhanga district of Bihar has tested negative for the wild virus, it was announced. ‘The ERC Mumbai laboratory, where the samples were being investigated, confirmed the case as negative Thursday evening,’ said a statement issued by Unicef India. The union health ministry, in a statement issued early Thursday, had said the case was suspected to be of wild poliovirus type 3 [WPV3]. As a measure of abundant precaution, the ministry has initiated rolling out an immunization drive in 28 districts of Bihar early next week. ‘Bihar has not had any case of WPV3 since January 2010. India has been polio-free since Jan 13, 2011. The WPV3 strain is prevalent in Nigeria and Pakistan,’ the official said.
