Natarajan quits for party work, Congress goes into poll mode

President Pranab Mukherjee accepted Natarajan’s resignation. Petroleum minister Veerappa Moily has been given additional charge of the environment ministry.

According to party sources, Gandhi is currently focused on overhauling the entire political system by empowering each level of leadership in the party. Gandhi has already said his main aim is to ‘open up the political system’. ‘He is personally looking at the 2014 elections very seriously and checking on issues which affected the party in the state elections,’ said a source.

Gandhi feels he has not lost his connect with the youth.  ‘It is something which the party needs to focus and encash on. Keeping the preparation for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in mind, Gandhi wants to bring in a lot of youth leaders in prominent positions in the party. He has taken a note of the defeats in the state elections very seriously and told the party to start preparing for the upcoming elections in 2014,’ said the source. After the debacle in the four state elections, Gandhi wants senior leaders of the party to pitch in to revive the party.

According to the buzz in political circles, more veteran Congress leaders are expected to offer their resignation to work on the mandate assigned by Gandhi. Former information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni and social justice and empowerment minister Mukul Wasnik left the union cabinet in the last reshuffle to look into the party’s affairs.
