Nasim Zaidi may be election commissioner

The government is likely to appoint the controversial former civil aviation secretary Nasim Zaidi as an election commissioner. The law ministry is learnt to have moved the file recommending the name of Zaidi to the Prime Minister's Office, sources in the government said on Thursday.

Zaidi had a rather controversial tenure as the director general of civil aviation. It was during his tenure that the process of giving licenses to fake flying schools started, a scam which was discovered much later. Also, during his tenure, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was accused of giving maximum number of licences to under-qualified pilots. The DGCA liberalised policy norms for private airlines, inviting accusations that it was done at the behest of private players.

Some of the decisions taken during Zaidi's tenure later truned out be scams in the aviation sector.

Sources added that the new appointment is likely to be notified in the next few days. Zaidi's term as the civil aviation secretary is due to end on 31 August.

The new election commissioner will fill the post vacated by V S Sampath, who was recently elevated as the chief election commissioner following the retirement of S Y Quraishi.

The third election commissioner is H S Brahma.
