‘I came to pay tribute to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary,’ says Dilip Bharat Malik (46), who came to the national Capital all the way from Nagpur on a cycle covering around 1,200 km. But what has grabbed attention is the fact that he has not been allowed to attend the function because he was late by just five minutes.
‘I am fond of the work done by Indira Gandhi during her prime minister-ship. She was one of the finest women in power till date,’ Malik said while describing the reason of his visit to Delhi. Speaking to Millennium Post while on his way to the event in Sarita Vihar, Malik expressed his desire to meet the Gandhi family. ‘I have also written a letter to Rahul Gandhi seeking permission to meet him and his family members. So far I have not received any response, but hope to get a positive reply some day,’ he said. But what has doused his high spirits in rendering his tribute to the late prime minister is the fact that he was not allowed to enter Shakti Sthal, the former prime minister’s memorial, as he was late by mere five minutes due to heavy traffic.
Malik is a resident of Mangalwari road in Nagpur and is a teacher of Nagpur Mahanagar Palika school. He is unmarried and lives with his widowed mother who is a staunch Congress supporter.
Speaking to Millennium Post he said: ‘I have started cycling on 25 October from Civil Lines in Nagpur and crossed Baretha Ghat, Hoshangabad, Bhopal, Shivpur, Gwalior, Muraina, parts of Rajasthan, Agra, Mathura and finally reached Delhi.
‘I am carrying all the necessary goods with me. It is hard to cycle 1,200 kms with a 5 kg iron mashal in front of the cycle. I also need to take care of the mashal that has to remain lit till the completion of the event,’ he said. Malik has booked a return ticket to Nagpur from New Delhi railway station on 1 November.
