Nadal outslugs Raonic, Serena wins

Nadal, a three-time runner-up on the Miami hardcourts, will play seventh seed Tomas Berdych for a place in Sunday’s final after the Czech eased into the last four with 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The other semifinal will see world number two Novak Djokovic take on Japan’s Kei Nishikori, who has already beaten fourth seed David Ferrer and 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer.

Serena Williams extended her dominance of Maria Sharapova on Thursday, defeating the Russian 6-4, 6-3 to reach the final of the Miami hardcourt tournament for the ninth time.

‘I knew that I could play better,’ Williams said of keeping her composure in the face of the big deficit. ‘I knew I could pick it up a level. ‘It wasn’t easy. Obviously Maria plays really well ... I just decided I had to do a little better, stay focused and make more shots,’ added Williams, who finished with 21 winners to 22 unforced errors and eight aces.

Li Na advanced to the final at the Sony Open by beating Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 early on Friday. Li improved to 7-0 against Cibulkova. She won despite being broken seven times and committing 40 unforced errors, closing out the victory at 12:33 am when Cibulkova hit a final forehand wide.

Li said she expected a tough match against Cibulkova. ‘Every city is different, every court different, ball different. Just looking forward for tomorrow. She’s playing well.’
