In a statement that reeked of racism and regionalism, an IPS officer claimed that people belonging to the north-east ‘so closely resemble each other’ that it becomes ‘extremely difficult’ for police to investigate crimes.
Superintendent of Police, CID (Cyber Crime) made the remark while addressing at a programme on ‘Information Security Awareness’ organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI). ‘Sometimes fake (bank) accounts are traced to the north-east and our inspectors, with great difficulty, go to the north-east… Manipur and Nagaland. First of all, it’s so difficult to go there, and there everybody looks alike. You can’t make out who is who.'
