The incident was reported to the police at around 4.30 pm when the couple’s daughter, who’s in her early twenties, returned home and found the main door locked from inside. When nobody opened the door she called her parents on their mobile phones. Her calls went unanswered.
When she called her father, K Vjay Kumar’s office, she found out that he had not gone to work. She then informed the neighbours, who in turn called the police.
When the police team entered the house, it found Vijay Kumar’s body lying in a pool of blood. His throat was slit. When the team reached the other room, it found Sita hanging from the ceiling fan.
Though senior officers remained tight-lipped about the incident, an investigating officer said, ‘Prima facie it appears to be a case of murder followed by suicide. But we are working on all plausible angles. No suicide note has been recovered from the premises. No signs of either a forceful or a friendly entry into the house have been found.’
Another official said, ‘We are investigating twin theories: murder followed by suicide and a double murder. The toes of the woman hanging from the ceiling fan were touching her bed as the rope was not long enough.’
‘A forensic team from the CBI has visited the crime scene and collected essential evidence. The daughter is being questioned to find out about her parent’s relationship,’ Vivek Gogia, joint commissioner of police (south-eastern range) said.
