My son is innocent: Nithari killer Koli’s mother

The 68-year-old Kunti Koli, who travelled from Mangrukhlal village in Almora,  Uttarakhand, met Surinder for just 45 minutes (between 11:45 am and 12:30 pm). Kunti was brought to Meerut, accompanied by a panchayat member of the village, Narayan Singh Rawat, and other members.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, she said Surinder has said that he was being made a scapegoat in order to save influential people, apparently referring to his former employer Moninder Singh Pandher.

‘My son informed me that he has been framed to save the main accused. He has been forced to accept crime despite being innocent,’ she said.

Koli’s mother further said: ‘If Pandher is not being given capital punishment, my son should be spared from it. If my son is being hanged, Pandher should also be hanged.’

She also said that Koli wanted to meet his eight-year-old son as he has not seen him since he was born. ‘As Surinder was in jail at the time of his birth, he has never seen his son. He has wished to meet the boy before hanging,’ said the mother.

42-year-old Surinder Koli was awarded death sentence by a lower court, which was upheld by the Allahabad High Court and confirmed by the Supreme Court on 15 February, 2011, for the murder of Rimpa Halder in 2005.

He was to be hanged on 12 September in Meerut jail, where he has been kept in a high-security barrack.

The Supreme Court, on 8 September, stayed the execution of his death sentence for a period of one week.
