My quitting won’t solve problem: Neeraj Kumar

Delhi police commissioner, Neeraj Kumar, took a strong stand against his detractors on Monday, while refusing to give in to increasing demands for his resignation. Commoners and top political leaders across the nation have been demanding Kumar's resignation in the wake of the increasing crime rate in the national capital, especially the rise in the number of crimes against women.

While addressing the media on Monday, Kumar, who was questioned whether he would give in to the demands for his resignation, told reporters, 'Does your editor resign if you make a mistake while reporting?'

The Delhi police commissioner added, 'If my resigning will prevent such depraved action from taking place in the society, I am ready to resign a thousand times. But my resignation is not going to address the problem.' Kumar said that his resignation is not the option, as the factors responsible for the rising number of crimes against women in the city were mental depravity, psychopathy and mental sickness among the people.

After the deputy commissioner of police (east), Prabhakar, announced the suspension of the station head officer (SHO) and the investigating officer of Gandhi Nagar police station in east Delhi till further orders, reports by the vigilance department, on the alleged attempt by the cops to hush up the case, is awaited. The victim's father had alleged that the cops tried to bribe him with Rs 2000 to hush up the case.

Kumar, however, blamed the victim's father for the delay in the filing of enquiry reports  on the allegations. 'The victim's father is too occupied with his daughter's treatment in AIIMS to help with the enquiry. We need him to identify the two policemen who allegedly tried to bribe him. Without this, we cannot punish anyone.'

Kumar said that they have offered to take the entire staff of the Gandhi Nagar police station to the hospital for the victim's father to identify the accused policemen, if he is unable to visit the police station for the identification process.  'If any of them is found guilty, we will take strict actions against him to set an example for other policemen,' Kumar added.

Kumar also said that  ACP, B Singh Ahlawat, of Khajoori Khas police station, has been suspended following a departmental inquiry, after he was caught on camera, slapping a protester. 'If the protester registers a formal complaint against the ACP, required actions will be taken against him.'
