The parents of the 23-year-old paramedical intern who had been brutally raped in a moving bus in the national capital on 16 December last year, expressed satisfaction with the quantum of punishment awarded to the four convicts.
'I haven't slept properly for nine months. I always seeher in my dreams. Often I dream of her crying. Her spirit had been demanding justice. With her rapists being awarded capital punishment, she might finally be able to rest in peace,’ the victim’s mother told Millennium Post. 'Bhagwan humare sath hain, log humare sath hain or kaanoon bhi humare sath hain.. (God is with us, people are supporting us and the law is with us),' said the father of the 23-year-old girl, who had succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital last December.
Neighbours of the family also expressed satisfaction. 'It doesn’t matter even if the accused move the high court. They have committed a heinous crime and every court will award them the same quantum of punishment,' said Rita (name changed), a neighbour.
People of the victim’s ancestral village lit candles and distributed sweets after hearing that a court has awarded death penalty to her attackers. Medawar Kalan village, which came into spot light after the incident last year, has been struggling to cope with floods in recent days, but its residents were more anxious about the verdict in the case and had been sitting glued to the TV sets since the morning.
Shocking, however, was the reaction of the neighbours of the four convicts, residents of a JJ colony in Ravi Dass Camp in south Delhi’s R K Puram. A relative of Ram Singh and Mukesh Singh said, 'With Ram Singh’s suicide both the victim’s and the accuseds’ families have lost one member each. The government has helped the victim's family in many ways, financially and emotionally. But in our case, the officials and the judiciary have not shown any sympathy. At least the court could have given life imprisonment, rather than capital punishment.'
Police officials close to the probe were in a jubilant mood. Vivek Gogia, joint commissioner (then southern range), south-eastern range appreciated the good work by his team, specifically former DCP (south) Chhaya Sharma, additional DCP PS Kushwah and the special staff. Anil Kumar, SHO Vasant Vihar said, 'The verdict is a relief for us. Mission accomplished.'
