Muzaffarnagar on edge after fresh communal clashes

With normal life virtually thrown out of gear, situation in this western district of Uttar Pradesh continued to remain tense on Thursday with additional deployment of forces including Rapid Action Force from the adjoining districts.

Officials in the district administration admit that after killing of three persons, tension has gripped Muzaffarnagar afresh.

Sources said that on Wednesday a couple riding a mobike were stopped by a group of hoodlums who initially stabbed them and later shot dead the women at Phugana in Shamli district late on Wednesday evening. ‘This incident in fact triggered violence,’ claimed sources.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has sent director general of police Deo Raj Nagar to personally monitor the situation in the violence hit areas. The DGP has been joined by Inspector general of Police (Law and Order), RK Vishwakarma, who was in Delhi to attend a meeting of the Election Commission, are both camping in Muzaffarnagar.

The incident of stabbing and later shooting down of the woman was later confirmed by Vishwakarma who said that it appeared to be communal in nature and added that investigations were on to identify the assailants and ascertain the motive behind the crime.

The incident occurred place on the Hasanpur-Lisadh road when the couple was returning after visiting a physician. They were intercepted by a group of armed assailants who first stabbed them and then shot at them, injuring the man named Rajendra while his wife succumbed to the gunshot injuries on the spot, said the police police.
