‘Music brings goodness’

Widely considered the pioneers of fusion rock genre in India, they have  enthralled music lovers. Calling their work purely passion, the band will soon be composing for Bollywood soon. Millennium Post caught up with them. Here are excerpts:

What’s keeping you going?

Our music is clearly the binding force for us. We really love what we do. And the strong belief that if you pursue what you really want in life, the whole universe conspires to make it available for you. I think that’s the ultimate truth for us.

From where do you derive inspiration for your music?

It’s actually nothing concrete. Our inspiration comes from unknown and unquantifiable objects. There are different art forms, music forms, life forms you experience daily and then you accumulate them. This finds its own unique expressions and comes out in our songs.

Do you idolise any other bands or singers?

Lots. But AR Rehman, Shankar Mahadevan are our top-most favourites. Sometimes we also love listening to Vishal Shekhar. Among bands, we like Silk Route and Deep Purple.

Do you face odds while making music? How do you overcome it?

Odds are there in every phase of life. What counts during that time is your honesty and dedication. Plus if you persevere, things work out on their own. There was a time when we were broke even to launch our cover album. But we somehow managed during that hardship due to the belief that we will get though this.

Are there any Bollywood plans soon?

We did Peepli Live last and there is a project which we are working on but we cannot give out the details since we are bound by a contract.

Do commercial bollywood movies inspire you enough to do lyrics for them?

It’s not the commercial value of movies which lures us to do songs for them. The sole reason is that we genuinely wish to be a part of any Bollywood project. Only after a lot of deliberations amongst our group do we say yes. We are not looking for money in Bollywood, rather it’s a mutual bond between our kind of music and acceptance from the other party.

Do you consider singing as a form of activism?

In a way it is. Singing as a art form is a big healer. It rouses certain soothingness which calms you down. It’s one of the most powerful tool of expressions to bring about any revolution or change provided you work for it in a better way. Music has a far more sensible character and depth as compared to those useless bhashans given out by so called false cataylsts of change.

There is a wide movement to ban Honey Singh and his music. Your reactions...

Well the kind of lyrics he chose is extremely bizzare. According to me, every artiste should know his limits. Creating music like his is an indecent way to become famous. Though people love titilation and encitement, but somewhere being a musician requires you to be decent enough to produce sensible and good music.

Should singers and other artistes adhere to social norms or should freeodm of expression be absolute for them?

Freedom of expression should definitely be absolute for artistes. There are no two ways about it. But most importantly, it should be balanced. Dignity along with limits is required here.
