Municipalika explores making of smart, green and safe city

Municipalika 2013, the three-day international conference, concluded with a consensus that Public Private People’s (PPP) partnership could lead to sustainable development. The conference saw stakeholders and city developers from across the world discuss their ideas on how to build safe, healthy, green, inclusive and smart cities.
The 11th international conference and exihibition saw the participation of top urban planning officials, including Sudhir Krishna, secretary, Ministry of Urban Development and Arun Kumar Misra, secretary, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Isher Judge Ahluwalia, chairperson, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, Rick Fedrizzi, chairman, World Green Building Council and T Nanda Kumar, member, National Disaster Management Authority.
Krishna, in his inaugural address, spoke about the prominent initiatives taken under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Phase I as well as the new initiatives to be undertaken for urban reform and to improve basic infrastructure gradation for civic services.
With rapid urbanisation, the government will be undertaking far reaching initiatives for improving transportation, water and waste management under phase II of JNNURM.
The necessity for adopting innovative ideas, including an inclusive humane approach, to cover the needs of all groups and urban design tools for three dimensional master planning were also stressed.
Conservative initiatives like low carbon technologies to retain the historic souls of the cities was also raised as a prime need.
