'Municipal polls flouted norms'

The opposition Congress has alleged violation of set norms in the election of chairman and deputy chairman of education committee in north Delhi and an expert member in the education committee of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

The leaders of opposition in both the corporations have written to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Tejinder Khanna, for immediate interference and invalidate their election.'Rekha Gupta,  elected for the post of Chairman of the Education Committee, was absent from the house during her election. So, her election for the post is invalid,' said Mukesh Goel, Leader of Opposition in NDMC.

'Similarly, the Municipal Secretary had only authorised the presiding officer to conduct election of the chairman but he was acting in violation of the set norms. Hence his election is also invalid,' added Goel.

He demanded that the election of both the candidates must be declared invalid.

Farhad Suri, Leader of Opposition in SDMC has also written to the governor to invalidate the election of T C Arora as expert member in the education committee of SDMC. 'T C Arora is a registered voter at Saraswati Vihar near Rohini, which falls under NDMC area,' said Suri. 'As per the rules of municipal corporation, the member must be a registered voter of the same corporation. So, his election is invalid for the post and must be nullified,' added Suri.
