Municipal Corporations to witness major reshuffle in top posts

In a significant move, Delhi BJP has decided to replace leaders at all the coveted posts in three MCDs — Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairman of the Standing Committees and Leader of the House. The new team will have only 10 months to perform as MCDs will go to polls in May, 2017.

Sanjeev Nayyar, a doctor by profession and councillor of BJP from Paschim Vihar, filed his nomination for the post of Mayor and Tara Chand Bansal of BJP of Rohini East filed his nomination for the post of Deputy Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. 

Senior BJP councillors Pravesh Wahi and Vijay Prakash Pandey filed nominations for the post of Leader of the House and Chairman Standing Committee respectively. As candidature of these councillors were not challenged by any of the Congress candidates, these leaders will be elected unopposed. Vijay Prakash Pandey, BJP councillor, Neelam Buddhiraja, another BJP councillor and Prithvi Singh Rathore from Congress, also filed their nominations for the posts of members of the Standing Committee to be nominated from the Corporation. There were three vacancies of members of the Standing Committee.

As Monday was the last day to file nominations in South MCD too, Shyam Sharma of BJP and Praveen Rana of Congress filed their nominations for the Mayor’s post. BJP’s Shashi Prabha and Shatish Gupta of Congress filed their nominations for the Deputy Mayor’s post. Sitting Mayor Subhash Arya filed his nomination for member Standing Committee along with Shailendra Singh and Leader of Opposition Fardah Suri. Sources in SDMC said that Arya is likely to be elected Leader of the House while Singh as Chairman Standing Committee. The elections for the posts of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and three members of the Standing Committees to be nominated by the Corporation will be held on April 27.

In the East MCD, Satya Sharma of BJP and Taj Mohammed of Congress filed their nominations for the post of Mayor while Raj Kumar Dhillo of BJP and Raj Kumari of Congress filed their nominations for the post of Deputy Mayor. 

Jeetendra Chaudhary and Sanjay Jain of BJP and Savita Sharma of Congress filed their nominations for the posts of members of the Standing Committee to be nominated from the Corporation. Chaudhary is likely to be elected as Leader of the House while Jain as Chairman Standing Committee.
