The Central government may make some announcements on operation of Munak Canal on Monday as Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday assured a BJP delegation that he will take “meaningful initiative” to solve the deadlock between both the states.
The Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu has summoned a meeting of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Khattar to sort out the issue on December 1.
“The minister has called a meeting on Monday on the issue of water and Haryana will take meaningful initiative in this regard,” said Khattar in a felicitation function in New Delhi. Besides, Munak Canal, Khattar also expressed his concerns over delayed construction of western corridor and some other projects between both the states.
Delhi High Court had recently ordered Haryana to release water in Munak Canal, a bone of contention between both the states since last several years. “We are considering a move to replace the current construction company with National Highway Authority of India and expect the construction work to start soon,” he added. According to sources, Khattar could be one of the prominent election campaigners of BJP in Delhi with a credit of solving Munak Canal issue.
“The politics of Delhi is much influenced by the politics of Haryana due to being neighbours and enjoying cultural similarities. We will engage all our leaders in the poll campaign,” said Praveen Shankar Kapoor, media in-charge of Delhi BJP. The issue of Munak Canal recently came in the limelight after Delhi High Court directed the Haryana government to release water within two weeks.
The Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu has also summoned a meeting of Delhi LG Najeeb Jung and Haryana Chief Minister on the issue next week.
The construction of Munak Canal was completed in 2011, but despite having Congress governments both in Delhi and Haryana the issue could not be sorted out. It was planned in 1999 and a water treatment plant of 40 MGD capacity was also constructed in Dwarka to provide drinking water to the residents there. As per the estimates of the government agencies, if Haryana agrees to supply water from this cemented canal Delhi would get 80 MGD of additional raw water which leaks over 160-km of the traditional canal which supplies raw water to Delhi for its water treatment plants.
