Mumbaikar arrested in Delhi for cheating

A man who allegedly pose himself as an officer and duped various women in Delhi and Mumbai has been arrested by Delhi’s south district police.

‘The accused, identified as Bhupinder Nath Verma, was arrested from Vasi Nagar in Mumbai by Vasant Kunj police staff,’ said deputy commissioner of police [south] Chhaya Sharma. He duped the women of Delhi and Mumbai by changing his voice on phone, Sharma said.

In February, a female victim, Sukanaya [name changed] resident of Vasant Kunj approached to the local police and lodged a complaint regarding receiving a call on her landline number by a caller, who introduced herself as a senior officer from Rohini. She told the police that the voice of woman caller sounded suspiciously male at sometimes.

Caller informed Sukanaya that more than 90 women of Delhi have lodged complaints against some male caller who had made obscene calls to them from her number. Since the number was registered in the name of her brother, she was told that if she would not deposit Rs 40,000 as security deposit, the case would be registered against her and her brother and both would be sent to prison for minimum 11 years.

She was told that her brother has given consent to give the money. The caller asked the complainant to meet him at AIIMS Metro station to hand over the money. Since the complainant was frightened, she did as she was told. She reached AIIMS Metro station where she met the accused and gave him Rs 25,000 for settling the issue.

After taking the money, accused asked her to accompany him to Gurgaon till her brother‘s interrogation at Rohini gets completed. Enroute, he had apparently molested her, added the complainant.

After receiving the complaint, a team was constituted to investigate the case. During the course of investigation, it came to the police’s notice that the accused is originally a resident of Mumbai. Accordingly, the team was dispatched to Mumbai and Verma was arrested.

During interrogation Verma told the police that he used to come Delhi and identify the targets. He used to call the victim in female voice and introduced himself as a senior officer and informed the target that the police received complaints that obscene calls were made from that particular number, because of which the user has to be arrested.

During the telephonic conversation, if the victim showed the fear, he would then suggest that in order to settle the issue, she would have to deposit some security amount as her brain mapping test and physical measurement has to be conducted.

He would then inform the victim to come to a designated place where she [accused in lady voice] would send a doctor to receive the money and to conduct the measurement test. The frightened victim in order to save her family members usually reach the designated place to meet the accused.

The mobile phone used in the crime and a SIM card has been recovered from his possession, Sharma added.
