Mumbai violence rocks Parliament

On Tuesday both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were shaken up by Mumbai violence. This issue created turmoil in Parliament for the second consecutive day with the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party demanding Central intervention and a judicial probe into the incidents.

The Congress hit back at the Sena alleging it was attempting to provoke people through articles in its mouthpiece Saamna.

However, it was an embarrassment for the BJP and the Shiv Sena in the Rajya Sabha with the key NDA ally JD(U) taking them to task for ‘communal remarks’. The Lok Sabha, which adjourned on this issue on Monday, saw Sena leader Anant Geete alleging a conspiracy behind the violence. He said those indulging in such incidents wanted to spread trouble across the country.

Even the Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Tuesday for a short while, over the remarks made by BJP and Shiv Sena members.

Balbir Punj and Sanjay Raut questioned the cause behind the violence in Mumbai and suggested if anybody wanted to go to Pakistan they were free to do so.

Shivanand Tiwari of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) who is also a partner of the NDA, raised objections to the remarks made by the two leaders. Tiwari said that this is the language of the street and demanded communal remarks should be expunged from the proceedings.

Punj asked how the people of Mumbai could be held responsible for the violence and suggested that due to vote bank politics the Congress-led government at the Centre and Maharashtra did not take action.

Meanwhile, Tiwari demanded a debate on the issue and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde agreed to the demand.
