Multi-authority system obstacle in health care development: Sheila govt

The Delhi government before the fourth Delhi Assembly Election in 2008 had laid down the foundation stones for almost twelve hospitals in different parts of Delhi, but owing to jurisdiction being divided between numerous authorities in the national capital, construction of the hospitals is yet to be completed. But with the Delhi Assembly polls round the corner, inauguration and foundation-stone-laying have started again.

Delhi Health Minister, Ashok Kumar Walia, said on Monday that Delhi government will open twelve more hospitals with a total capacity of 2,900 beds to provide medical facilities in hitherto uncovered areas of the city. Last month, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated OPD services in the Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital in Ashok Vihar. This is one of the twelve hospitals, the foundation of which had been laid in 2008 before the Delhi Assembly polls. Official sources said that the rest of the services, including OPD, are likely to be started in July 2013. The Chief Minister on 16 February had laid down the foundation stone  of a 200-bed hospital in Burari. The construction of the hospital has also started. But Dikshit has always maintained that ‘Due to the national capital being under the jurisdiction of multiple authorities like the DDA, MCD, Delhi Urban Art Commission and others, development work in the city is tough.’

Walia said that the Delhi government has opened eight health centres at Molar Bandh(Gautam Puri), Madan Pur Khadar, (Phase-1 & 11), Rohini Sector-4 and Sector-21, Gandhi Vihar, Buland Masjid (Shastri Park) and Savda Ghevra.
