Mulayam & son to hold 18 rallies to counter Modi’s nine gatherings

The Samajwadi Party meet on Monday to discuss its plans for general elections 2014, including how to counter the Narendra Modi offensive launched by the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son and UP chief minister and Akhilesh plan to address 18 joint rallies in the state, covering all parts of it, and party workers briefed about the plan for these on Monday.

On Saturday, lakhs attended a rally addressed by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in Kanpur, where he asked the people of the state to throw out the Akhilesh Yadav government, offering lacerating criticism for it on law and order, unemployment and not least for ‘saving the UPA through the back door.’

Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday asked party activists to reach out to the people with the achievements of the state government to ensure victory in maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha polls.

‘The coming Lok Sabha polls are crucial and you all should try to ensure that SP gets maximum number of seats. The booth committees should be strengthened and you should apprise the people of the policies and achievements of the SP government,’ Yadav told party leaders at the state executive meeting in presence of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Mulayam will hold two rath yatras for ‘Samajik Nyay’ and ‘justice to 17 backward classes’ on 24 October and address a rally in Azamgarh on 29 October.

The party leaders were directed to take these programmes seriously and ensure their success. While the yatras are aimed at wooing people belonging to backward classes, the Azamgarh rally would Mulayam’s first election rally, sources said.

Mulayam asked leaders to shun differences, if any, and work unitedly for the party.

Asked whether the meeting discussed withdrawal of support to the UPA government, party spokesman Rajendra Chowdhury said, “We are not supporting Congress... Our support to the UPA is issue-based.”

Claiming that SP would play a major role in the formation of the next government at the Centre, he said, ‘Netaji (Mulayam) is of the view that neither BJP nor Congress will succeed in winning much seats to form the government... Third Front will be the one which would succeed in forming the government.’

The BJP has plannned nine such mega Modi shows in the state, which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha and always plays a crucial role in government formation at the Centre.

The SP is aiming at consolidating the backward, Muslim and most backward vote banks and is scheduled to launch a state-wide rath yatra to woo the 18 most backward castes in the state.
Mulayam Singh’s party has 22 MPs in the Lok Sabha and offers external support to the Congress-led Manmohan Singh government at the Centre.
