Just a day before fulfilling the dreams of over 400 poor, homeless people, the Delhi government on Monday put on hold the allotment of 400 economically Weaker Sections (EWS) flats. The office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has neither given any reason for the cancellation of the date nor provided a new date to carry out the process of handing over the flats.
The much talked about event was being organised by Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) for which the L-G had given directions on November 3. “The scheduled allotment of the flats to 400 EWS candidates has been cancelled and the next date would be announced very soon,” said the government’s statements. The earlier statement issued by the government announcing allotment said, “The process of handing over will continue and possession of all the 8,815 flats will be handed over during the first quarter of 2015. All flats are to be handed over in repaired condition, including water and power connections”.
According to Delhi Urban Development Secretary Rajendra Kumar: “DUSIB has already identified families in the 32 slum clusters across Delhi who will be given possession of these flats.” In 2008, Delhi government had completed the construction of around 14,000 flats. That were to be allotted to people belonging to the EWS. But six years later, the flats are empty, and have fallen into disrepair.
No allotment has been made till now, though the government had received 1.5 lakhs of applications over the years. These flats, which will be handed over to eligible slum dwellers and economically weaker sections are located in Bawana, Baprola, Bhorgarh and Narela. There are 5,568 flats in Baprola and 893 flats in Bawana. Besides, there are 942 flats in Bhorgarh and 1,412 flats in Narela.
The residents of slum clusters who will be given flats in this phase include Netaji Nagar, East Kidwai Nagar, Pratap Camp, Badli, Khichripur, Kali Bari Marg, R K Puram, Sunheri Bagh, Kirbi Place among others.
