Motorists to pay challan amount via credit, debit cards

Soon traffic offenders in the capital will be able to pay their traffic challans by using their credit, debit cards and via internet banking. Motorists who use State Bank of India’s internet banking facility will have to pay no additional cost.

Those who are paying through cards will have to pay a nominal fee ranging from 0.65 per cent of the challan amount to 1 per cent per transaction, excluding taxes. The payment gateway finalised by the ministry of home affairs will be provided by the SBI.

According to the Delhi traffic police, the proposal put forth by the SBI has been approved by the MHA and once the payment gateway is connected to the central server of the e-challan devices, the facility will become available.

‘A user paying through a SBI ATM card will be charged 0.65 per cent of the challan amount, excluding of taxes. Motorists paying through the cards from other banks will have to pay 0.75% of the challan, if the amount is up to Rs 2,000 and 1% of the challan if the amount is above Rs2,000,’ said a senior Delhi traffic police officer.

Even those who are paying through internet banking from other banks will invite 1 per cent, exclusive of taxes, of the challan amount. The payment gateway will come as a savior for motorists who run out of cash. ‘The cards can be swiped on the spot via e-challan devices carried by the traffic police personnel to prosecute offenders’, said Taj Hassan, special commissioner, Delhi traffic police.

The facility was part of the Delhi traffic police’s ambitious e-challan system, which was made fully operational last year. ‘The e-challan devices are equipped with the facility to swipe credit card or debit card to pay the penalty levied for traffic violations. Once operational, it will make the issuing as well as paying of the traffic challans easier and faster. On an average, 12,000 challans are issued per day using the e-challan devices,’ Hassan added.
