With the 88,000 cusecs of water released by Haryana in the Yamuna on Saturday night, which reached Delhi on Sunday, the river has started to swell and is expected to cross the danger mark by Monday afternoon. 'The water level in the river is increasing gradually since morning and is expected to cross the “alarm point” of 204 metres by Monday. We have issued alarm to the concerned departments for necessary action,' said a senior officer of flood department in Delhi.
Haryana released 88,000 cusec of water from the Hathini Kund dam on Saturday night. The water level in the river in the early morning was 203.44 metres, which had risen to 203.94 metres at 5.00 pm on Sunday. According to officials, Haryana has also released 22,275 cusec of water on Sunday afternoon. 'The officials in Haryana routinely release water in the river based on the rain fall in the catchment area of upper Yamuna, which increases water level of the river in Delhi,' added the official.
The maximum water level in the river in this season has been 203.97 metres on 24 August. As the rain in the northern region is expected to continue for the next week the flood department has expected more water from Haryana in to the river. 'The water level in the river may increase in coming days due to rain in the catchment area of upper Yamuna region followed by more release of water from Haryana,' added the official. The maximum water level in the river in 2011 was 205.72 metres.
Meanwhile, Delhi received 24.2 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on Sunday, which was 24.6 mm in the last 24 hours. According to the weather department, the city may receive moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder-showers. The maximum and minimum temperature will hover around 30 and 25 degree Celsius. According to Met department officials, Delhi has received 346 mm of rain fall in this season, which is still 152 mm less than the normal rainfall.
