Monsoon session gets off to blistering start

The Lok Sabha adjourned for the day after the obituary references following the demise of sitting member Dilip Singh Bhuria.

Congress leader Anand Sharma led the Opposition attack in Rajya Sabha moving an adjournment motion. An equally aggressive government said it was ready for the same. To which Opposition demanded resignation of foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj over her help to the former IPL chief, before the discussion commenced.

The House saw repeated adjournments before it was finally adjourned for the day as Opposition refused to relent. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who is leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, said government had offered that the issue be discussed with Swaraj making a statement on it, but the Opposition rejected it.

“We get a distinct and clear impression that the Opposition doesn’t want a discussion. The government is publicly declaring, as we have in the House, that we are ready for a discussion in any format, at any time,” Jaitley told mediapersons after Rajya Sabha was adjourned.

The government, however, did not agree to the demand for discussion on the charges of corruption against Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje. “Obviously state issues can’t be discussed. There has not been a single precedent in the history of Indian Parliament where state issues are discussed. That’s the part of federal politics of India,” Jaitley said.

In a counter to the Opposition move, the BJP MPs during the day gave notices for discussion on alleged cases of corruption in the states not ruled by the BJP. The move is aimed at isolating the Congress as the regional parties would never agree to a discussion on state matters, said
a BJP leader.

Vyapam issue rocks MP Assembly
Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and rival Congress MLAs were on Tuesday involved in a scuffle in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly premises during which the Leader of the Opposition was allegedly punched after pandemonium rocked the House over Vyapam scam. The Assembly was adjourned several hours ahead of schedule as BJP and Congress created a ruckus and traded charges over the Vyapam scam relating to irregularities in admissions and recruitment.

At noon, the House was finally adjourned for the day after it passed a Censure Motion against Congress members for indulging in unparliamentary behaviour. The Monsoon Session of the Assembly began on Monday. The scuffle took place when the Congress legislators were staging a protest in the hall near the main entry of the House after the Assembly was adjourned for the day by Speaker Sitasharan Sharma.
