Monsoon blues: NDMC clueless in tackling falling trees

The monsoon is expected very soon. As a precautionary measure I have asked the concerned department to identify dangerous trees so as to avoid any untoward incidents’, said Archana Gupta, chairman of garden committee, NDMC. However, the corporation is still clueless as to how it will identify vulnerable trees and what steps it will be take to rectify it.

A senior civic official, on the basis of anonymity, said that it is very difficult identify such trees. ‘How do we know that a particular tree is going to fall unless there are some glaring signals? We can’t uproot a tree to check whether it is going to fall during a storm or not’, the officer said.
Even after a tree is identified as ‘vulnerable’, the civic authority can’t uproot any tree, for the fear of damaging the green cover in the city. ‘First, we will have to take permission from forest department. Just in case the tree needs to be uprooted altogether, then the corporation will have to plant 10 trees in place of it’, the officer informed.

The branches of some of the trees were also reported to have fallen on Wednesday, post the rain.  The NDMC reports showed that 90 trees fell during the storm. The storm created havoc in Delhi and claimed as many as 14 lives.
