Mono Rail project all set to start, to be on track by 2017

Ahead of the assembly polls later this year, chief minister Sheila Dikshit has gifted the Mono
Rail project to the congested trans-Yamuna region. The work on the project will begin from February. According to Dikshit, the project would complement the Metro as clean transport system and would make such areas accessible where Metro lines cannot be laid.

According to Delhi government officials, laying of Mono Rail lines is cheaper as compared to Metro lines. The 11-km corridor from Shastri Park Metro station to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations with three inter-change points at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri to integrate it with three Metro lines including Dilshad Garden-Rithala, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and the proposed Trilokpuri Metro station on Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar line.

Expected to become operational in 2017, the corridor is estimated to cost Rs 2,235 crore.

The corridor would cater to around 1.5 lakh passengers daily initially and it is proposed that the fare would be somewhat identical to metro fares.
