‘Monitoring situation closely in copter deal’

Soon after the arrest of Guido Ralph Haschke, the alleged middleman in the Rs 3,600 crore Agusta Westland VVIP choppers deal, by Swiss authorities, the CBI swung into action and said that ‘they are monitoring the situation closely’.

Though agency sources said that they have not decided on writing to Swiss and Italian authorities over the arrest they may do so in near future. Haschke is amongst 13 accused in the case that the agency is probing.

‘We are waiting for the letter rogatories we have already sent to Italian authorities. We will take further decisions soon,’ a senior CBI official said.

Italian authorities have already sought Haschke’s extradition from the Swiss who have agreed.
According to Italian news website, La Repubblica, Haschke could be brought to Italy by next week in case he prefers not to appeal against extradition proceedings before the Swiss Federal court. The court in Switzerland ruled that Haschke can be extradited to Italy.
