Modi’s proposed talk in Sri Ram college stirs hornets’ nest in DU

Federation of Central University Teacher’s Association (FEDCUTA) of Delhi university has condemned the politicisation of educational institutions, following Shri Ram College of Commerce’s (SRCC) invitation to Narendar Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat to lecture on Gujarat festival.

Modi’s visit to the college will also see protests in the campus by at least one Leftist student group: Durgesh Tripathi of the All India Students Federation (AISF) said its members will demonstrate outside the college.

S D Siddqui, general secretary of FEDCUTA said,  ‘SRCC is an academic institution and not a political council or a business house.’ According to him, the college has no reason to invite a controversial politician.

By condemning the action of the college principal, Siddiqui said, ‘The observation of the college principal that “We expect the students to benefit from CM’s lecture”, is not only retrograde and deplorable but also displays a lack of academic mind-set as well as a highly questionable approach as head of anacademic institution of higher learning’.

‘FEDCUTA exhorts the SRCC management and principal to rethink their decision to invite Modi,’ added Siddqui.

When contacted P C Jain, principal of SRCC said, ‘I always abide by constitution and nowhere in constitution it has been written, that political leaders should not address educational institutions of the democratic world.’
