Narendra Modi on Thursday turned Race Course Road (RCR) into a no-smoking zone. Modi has endorsed the idea of health minister Harsh Vardhan to make India tobacco free. Sources said a few days back Modi was out early morning at around 5 am and smelt tobacco in the air. He reportedly saw a Special Protection Group official smoking in one corner. Modi decided not to embarrass the official and chose a different path instead for his morning walk. On Thursday, there was a notice at the RCR requesting people not to smoke inside the premises as this could pollute the environment. It also pointed at the ill effects of tobacco. All security officers were asked to comply with the ‘request letter’ from the PM, which sought their cooperation to make India a tobacco free country.
A PMO source said, ‘We talk about pollution and measures to deal with the menace. Our PM has started the practice from RCR.’ Modi has chosen 5, RCR as his residence, while 7, RCR is his workplace. The 12 acres of PM’s residence-cum-office and security are spread across five bungalows: one, three, five, seven and nine. Bungalow number nine is occupied by SPG, while Bungalow 3 has been converted into a guesthouse for PM’s guests.
