Senior BJP leaders visited the area on Wednesday to work out the details of holding the mega event. According to sources, it is almost final and Modi would hold a broom to sweep the area on the day of the launch of the mission. From here, he will go to India Gate where people would take pledges to devote two hours in a week on sanitation in their locality.
The sanitation drive, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan; is being launched on the occasion of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who himself was one of the biggest supporters of cleanliness particularly in slums, villages and colonies of the Dalits. The Balmiki Basti was earlier known as Harijan Basti and Gandhi stayed here for 214 days from 1 April, 1946, to 1 June, 1947. He used to teach Dalit children there. The representatives of the British government used to come here to meet him in those days.
Recently, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal also started his ‘Jhadu Yatra’ from this place during the Delhi assembly elections in 2013.
Meanwhile, Delhi government has issued a notification to all the departments, civic bodies and autonomous units to administer the pledge of cleanliness to their staff members in their offices at 9 am on 2 October.
‘The officers will ensure conducting inspections of the offices and supervise cleanliness drives in their office premises,’ said chief secretary DM Spolia. He also instructed the officers to extend their services and fullest cooperation of their departments during the launch programme of ‘Swachh Bharat’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Capital.
Spolia also asked them to prepare a calendar of the events taking place from 2-31 October with regard to cleanliness campaigns in a tabulated form and to submit it to the secretary of Urban Development, who will further submit the calendar of events to the Urban Development minister M Venkaiah Naidu.
Apart from this, the chief secretary also asked the officers to nominate the nodal officers in their respective departments who will submit daily reports to them to further submit to the government.
He also added that he will write to the MLAs of Delhi to carry out the cleanliness drives in their respective areas involving people from cross sections of society, RWAs, NGOs for making the campaign a grand success.
