In the midst of the talks of the rise of AAP having reined in the political juggernaut unleashed by Narendra Modi, the Gujarat chief minister returns to Delhi on Thursday to address the delegates of 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas at Vigyan Bhawan. The significance of the address can be judged from the fact that it comes a day after prime minister Manmohan Singh’s inaugural address to the delegates on Wednesday.
Smarting under the hurt caused by PM’s remarks at the recent press conference saying Narendra Modi would be disastrous if he became PM, the BJP’s candidate for the top job would try to showcase his plans for reviving the ailing economy. Though the forum would be apolitical, Modi could use the opportunity to hawk his Gujarat models as the panacea for the ills which have come to grip the Indian economy under the 10-year UPA regime.
The PM’s assurance that the country’s economy is heading for good times and there is no reason to despair about its present or future, is expected to be criticised by Modi with some latest facts and figures. He is likely to raise the issue of Gujarat consistently achieving double digit growth in GDP for last so many years, as against the GDP ebbing under the Manmohan Singh government and hovering around 4.5-5.0 per cent.
Modi, who said several times in the past that the biggest problem of the UPA model of development was that it is based on exploitation, will also comment on the way natural resources were being depleted and may extend it to focus on corruption in allocation of natural resources for exploitation. The Gujarat government has also set up a pavilion, which features the development in the state in the last decade under Modi’s leadership.
