Modi smokes peace pipe, reaches out to Advani, Gadkari

Having used the stick to get his close aide Amit Shah appointed as the general secretary in charge for Uttar Pradesh for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held out a carrot to his known detractors – former party presidents Lal Krishna Advani and Nitin Gadkari.

The meeting between the two leaders is seen as Modi’s effort to smoke the peace pipe and water down the stiff opposition he has been facing from the senior leaders over his prime ministerial ambitions. ’In Delhi today. Had a wonderful meeting with Advaniji on arrival at Delhi,’ tweeted Modi after his meeting with the veteran leader.

Advani, in the past, had expressed reservations over Modi’s name and in the last national executive of the party held in Delhi, the veteran leader heavily praised Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj and equated her with former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The pat on the back on Swaraj had come at a time when the cadre was chanting Modi’s name. Also, whenever Modi has been praised for good governance, Advani has made it a point to equate Modi’s governance with that of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Apart from making an effort to mend fence with Advani, the Gujarat chief minister also reached out to former BJP president Nitin Gadkari. The former BJP president is seen as a neutral person now, whose vote in favour of Modi might just make the Gujarat chief minister’s candidature stronger.

Gadkari is known to be close to Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh.

Modi, apart from meeting the two senior leaders, attended the parliamentary board meeting for the first time after his re-induction.
