Modi leaves for US, hopes visit will mark ‘new chapter’

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday left for the United States on a five-day visit to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York and meeting with US president Barack Obama in Washington. In a statement issued in New Delhi before his departure, Modi described America as a vital partner of India’s development and expressed confidence that his trip will mark a new chapter in bilateral strategic ties.

‘I will discuss with President Obama how we can use the strength of all that we share and all that we have built so far to take our relationship to a new level in the interest of two countries and the cause of this world. I am confident that the visit will mark the start of a new chapter in our strategic partnership,’ he said before taking off. Modi will have a stopover in Frankfurt on Thursday night and will reach New York on Friday and later proceed to Washington on 29 September.
