Modi as PM: To brass of RSS takes up issue

As debate rages within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the timing of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, declaration as the prime ministerial candidate of the party, the top brass of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) met on Thursday to discuss the issue.

Sources say that in the meeting it was decided not to hurry with Modi’s declaration as the Sangh fears that a hasty decision could backfire for the party. Sources added that Sangh was of the view that the issue of prime ministerial candidate needs further deliberation before arriving at a conclusion. The issue of prime ministerial candidate will also be discussed during the two day meeting between RSS and BJP top brass on 8 and 9 September.

In the run up to the declaration of prime ministerial candidate the BJP has appeared as a divided house, with senior BJP leaders like LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj of the view that Modi should only be declared after the assembly elections in four states. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi are the four states BJP is in direct contest with Congress.

On the other hand BJP leader Arun Jaitley has repeatedly stated the need for declaring the Prime Ministerial candidate as early as possible. Jaitley had recently said that there should be no controversy over the issue of the party’s prime ministerial candidate as that would be akin to committing a hit-wicket.

The RSS meeting was held in Delhi on Thursday and was attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, General Secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi, Joint Gen Sec Dattatreya Hosabale, Suresh Soni, KC Kannan and Krishna Gopal.

Interestingly the meeting was also attended by Madan Das Devi who was the pointsman of the Sangh when National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was in power. RSS is holding three day deliberation beginning from Thursday with its state office bearers and heads of other frontal organisation of the RSS.
