Modi aide Amit Shah gets charge of UP

Adding fuel to the speculation that Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi might contest from Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 general elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh on Sunday appointed Modi’s key aide and party general secretary Amit Shah as the in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 Lok Sabha seats.

Shah’s appointment indicates an increasing bonhomie between Rajnath Singh and Modi, as Shah’s candidature for in-charge of the state was met with stiff resistance which led to delay in declaring the list. Uttar Pradesh is the only state where three co-in charges have also appointed. Rameshwer Chaurasiya who is co-in charge in Uttar Pradesh, is also known as a Modi supporter. However, Trivendra Singh Rawat and Satyendra Kushwaha, the other two co-in charges, are known to be close to the BJP president.

‘The first major step we will see in Uttar Pradesh will be removal of all functionaries appointed by former BJP general secretary Sanjay Joshi, who has been at loggerheads with Modi,’ said a BJP leader.

The list also indicates rise in the stock of young BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi who has been given added responsibility as in-charge of West Bengal relieving Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra, who will now be handling Odisha only.

Announcement of the name of in-charge for Delhi has not been made and it’s likely that it would go to former president Nitin Gadkari.

Smriti Irani has been made the in-charge of Goa and Balbir Punj has been made in-charge of Himachal Pradesh. For the poll-bound state of Madhya Pradesh, Ananth Kumar has been retained.

So has been JP Nadda for Chattisgarh. For another poll-bound state Rajasthan, Captain Singh has been made in-charge.
