Mobile towers under scrutiny

Delhi government on Wednesday constituted a committee to look after the mobile phone towers in residential buildings.

The committee includes chief secretary P K Tripathi, principal secretary  (Health) Anshu Prakash and principal secretary to chief minister, M M Kutty.

Sources said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday convened the meeting with the newly-formed committee, where  the issue of threat of radiation from mobile towers was discussed.

Highly-placed sources told Millennium Post that a private company has given a detailed report to the committee stating that they can reduce the radiation level by up to 90 per cent by installing optical fibre antennas near the towers.

A government official said the committee was formed because of the public interest litigation that was issued to the Delhi government to bar the installation of mobile phone towers on residential buildings.

This move was made in the light of apprehensions that radiation from these towers could be carcinogenic. Notices were also issued to the Health ministry and the department of telecommunications.

Government officials said the company has given the report to Delhi government but asked for an exorbitant fee for installing these antennas.

Sources said after scrutinising the proposal, Delhi government would send it to Union IT ministry and Urban Development ministry for approval.

Sources said this is a novel method in India but has been in use for quite some time now in many foreign countries.
