Minor rape victim conscious, alert, stable, talking: Doctors

The five-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Gandhi Nagar, East Delhi, and held captive for four days, before being rescued and admitted to AIIMS for treatment, is showing gradual recovery and slept well during the night. She is in 'stable' condition after a surgery, and may not undergo any reconstructive surgery for now.

‘For now, no such surgery will be done on her. May be after couple of months, but we will have to see if there is a need. At present her vital parameters are stable. Her colostomy is functioning. She is conscious, alert and talking to parents, nurses and doctors,' said an AIIMS official.

According to  sources, the victim is suffering from mild fever, which is also showing improvements. As such, there is no danger to her life and she is being looked after by a team of experienced doctors led by Dr. Sandeep Agarwal from the paediatric surgery department.

The child was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Gandhi Nagar, east Delhi, and held captive for four days before being shifted to a local hospital where medical examination revealed vaginal tear extending up to the anal opening and damaged walls.

She was shifted to AIIMS on Friday, where eight specialists from paediatric surgery, paediatric medicine, gynaecology, urology, forensic medicine and anaesthesia department have been treating her.

'The victim had undergone colostomy, which is a surgical procedure to create an artificial opening to the exterior of the abdomen for passing stool. It has been done for faster healing of the vaginal wall and rectum which are badly damaged and infected. We will have to wait for two to three days to start giving food orally,' said Dr DK Sharma, medical superintendent, AIIMS.

Doctors have also performed surgical dressing of her perineal injuries which, the medical superintendent added, was evaluated again on Sunday and dressed under anaesthesia.

According to the hospital authorities, the girl is recovering well. 'All her vital parameters are under permissible limit. She is not in ICU but under close monitoring,' said a senior doctor.

Meanwhile, protests continued on Sunday outside AIIMS, where around 25-30 people had assembled, demanding justice for the rape victim. 'We are demanding justice not just for this girl but for every other woman. The rapists should be castrated and then hanged,' said a protester from Aligarh.

Vikas Tyagi, a resident of Delhi, said the death penalty was the only way to stop rapes. 'We demand that the culprit be hanged till death. Only then will it establish fear in the hearts of such people,' he said.
